December 2007

There are two important things to emphasize when we meditate: our motivation at the beginning and our dedication at the end.

Hi there

Work has got under way with the extension at Atisha Centre (Please check our website for regular photos of the refurbishment of Atisha Centre).  We hope to have the new kitchen built and fitted by the next Feast of Delight, Friday 14th December, 7.30pm.  The new dining room should be complete by the end of February 2008.

It is still not too late to help out with this project.  At the end of this article is a list of items that the Centre would like for Christmas if possible.  As you may know, Atisha Centre is a registered charity and any money saved on the work done will be wisely put to use on making sure Dharma flourishes in the region.  Also, by giving Atisha Centre a Christmas present, this year, you will be benefiting lots of people both now and in the future.  If you would like to help out, donations and presents can be sent to the Centre at Milton St.

If you don’t have enough funds to help out this way, then perhaps you would like to help us demolish the old kitchen. In the New Year the old kitchen cupboards are going to be knocked down and destroyed, walls & ceiling are to be plastered and the dining room will be re-fitted and decorated.  The dining room will be done by us without external builders and fitters.  Just let us know nearer the time if you would like to help with this one.

Finally, there is one bedroom still going spare at the Centre.  Moving into a residential Buddhist community might be just the start in the New Year for you, especially with the retreat season starting in January!  Rent is only £61.50 a week.  Just contact the Centre if you are interested.

Medicine Buddha Empowerment

Medicine Buddha Empowerment weekend — what
a wonderful time we had!

Here's some pictures from the event...

Medicine Buddha Empowernent

On Saturday 10th November we had a blessing
empowerment of Medicine Buddha; which means
very simply that we all received the inspiring
blessings of Medicine Buddha through guided
meditations and rituals performed by Venerable
Chödor.

Medicine Buddha Offerings Table

There were people from all walks of life, lay and ordained and all ages — from 5 to 80!

Medicine Buddha Empowerment Offerings

Thanks to everybody for all their efforts (especially Chödor of course!) and to everyone who came for making it such a joyful weekend.

Vajrasattva Retreat

Saturday 15th December - Friday 21st December

Retreat sessions at:

7.00am - 10.30am - 4.00pm - 7.00pm.

You don't need an empowerment to do this retreat, and you don't need to attend all sessions - just come to whatever you like.

No Booking Required - Everybody Welcome

In our previous lives, while under the influence of deluded minds, we have accumulated a lot of negative Karma. As a result, we now experience difficulties and obstacles to our Dharma practice. We have been accumulating non-virtuous actions and experiencing their suffering results since beginningless time; but now we have an opportunity to purify them completely. Since purification is the root of future happiness and spiritual realisations, we should strive to cleanse our mind of delusions and negative Karma by practising the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva.

Each session will last ninety minutes and all se ssions are free.

If you have any questions about what we do in the sessions or anything else about retreats, just email Debbs at eeducation@atishameditation.co.uk

Field of Hearts

Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony
Sunday 30th Dec 11am - 12.30pm
Cost is £5

In general everyone needs to practise moral discipline because it is the root of all future happiness. The Bodhisattva’s moral discipline however is a higher moral discipline and the main path that leads to the ultimate happiness of great enlightenment.

Make the New Year a special year by taking the Bodhisattva Vows and practising to the best of our ability the Bodhisattva’s meaningful way of life.
