Welcome to the website of
Atisha Buddhist Centre.
We offer weekly step-by step meditation classes, day courses and Buddhism Study Programmes.
Everybody is welcome to visit the Centre or participate in our classes and study programmes.
There should be something for everyone from those wishing to find quick release from the strains and stresses of daily life to those wishing to train to become qualified Kadampa meditation teachers.
Please find details of our weekly drop in classes throughout the North East - ideal for beginners.
We also run regular day courses and in-depth study programmes for those who wish to study the teachings in more depth.
The Centre was established in 1992 by the renowned Buddhist teacher Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Home to a small community of Kadampa practitioners, we cater for anyone who wishes to learn and practise Buddhist meditation and way of life.
Why is meditation important? The purpose of meditation is to familiarize ourselves with virtuous states of mind which create the cause for inner peace. When our mind is peaceful, we will be free from worries and mental discomfort. If our mind is unpeaceful it is very difficult to be really happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions (for more information about meditation please see our page About Meditation).
